What Is Oak Wilt and Why Is It Serious?

Oak Wilt is a fatal fungal disease that spreads quickly and kills Oak trees.

What’s Actually Happening

Oak Wilt spreads through:

  • Root grafts between neighboring Oaks
  • Sap-feeding beetles attracted to fresh pruning wounds

The fungus blocks water transport within the tree. Once infected, most Oaks decline rapidly.

Local Context (Niagara)

Oak Wilt has been spreading in parts of Ontario. Pruning Oaks during high-risk periods increases exposure.

How to Handle It

  • Avoid pruning Oaks during high-risk months (April – November)
  • Never wound Oaks unnecessarily in warm seasons
  • If suspected, contact a qualified arborist immediately

Bottom Line

Oak Wilt is serious and often fatal. Prevention is critical.
