What Is Tree Bracing?

Tree bracing provides structural reinforcement lower in the trunk to support weak areas.

What’s Actually Happening

Bracing typically involves:

  • Installing threaded steel rods through weak unions
  • Reinforcing split trunks
  • Supporting cracked stems

In some cases, systems may include cradling components to support structural weaknesses.

Bracing works lower in the tree, while cabling works higher in the canopy. The two are

sometimes combined.

How to Handle It

Bracing may be considered when:

  • A trunk has split but remains structurally salvageable
  • A weak union needs reinforcement
  • The tree has significant structural value

Not all defects can or should be braced.

Bottom Line

Bracing reinforces structure — but it doesn’t restore perfect strength
