What Is Tree Cabling?
Tree cabling is a support system installed in the canopy to reduce stress on weak unions.
What’s Actually Happening
Cabling uses either:
- Steel cables
- Synthetic rope systems
to connect major limbs and redistribute load.
It does not “fix” defects — it reduces movement and stress.
Cabling can potentially extend the life of certain trees (for example, historically supported trees
like the Comfort Maple). However, urban trees surrounded by houses require careful
consideration because targets increase consequences.
How to Handle It
Cabling may be appropriate when:
- Weak unions exist
- Co-dominant stems are present
- Valuable mature trees show manageable defectsIt should always be installed and periodically inspected by a qualified arborist.
Bottom Line
Cabling manages risk — it does not eliminate it
